On August 27, 2021, Maher Nasser, Director of the Outreach Division of the United Nations Global Communications Department, replied on behalf of Melissa Fleming, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations in charge of global communications affairs, to Harmony Liu (Liu Xinge), a 15-year-old Chinese-American, highly appreciating the environmental protection actions and ideas she expressed in her letter on August 23, which were committed to protecting Mother Earth, preventing Japanese nuclear pollution of the ocean, and achieving sustainable development for all of humanity.
Harmony Liu is currently a tenth-grade student at Long Island High School in New York and serves as the Secretary-General of the World Harmony Foundation's Youth Leadership Committee and a youth ambassador for the foundation. The World Harmony Foundation is a major non-governmental organization of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Harmony Liu launched the Global Environmental Protection Action - Harmony Liu Global Initiative in support of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals beauty pageant and award ceremony.
On August 23, 2021, Harmony Liu wrote to Melissa Fleming, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Global Communications Department, on behalf of the new generation of youth, expressing concerns about the current global public ecological crisis and attention to future sustainable development issues for all of humanity. In her letter, she discussed how human progress, particularly the development of modern industrial civilization, has caused serious ecological damage to our only home, the Earth, as humanity enjoys the benefits of industrial civilization. The global climate change, marine pollution, forest fires, heavy rain and floods, and even the COVID-19 pandemic are all warning signs from nature to humanity.
In her letter, she specifically mentioned the issue of the Japanese government's decision to discharge nuclear waste into the ocean. She urged the United Nations to call on global experts in relevant fields to work together to find a reasonable solution for Japan to dispose of nuclear waste, so that this potential global public ecological crisis and even survival crisis can be resolved in a reasonable way. Directed by Chen-Wei Liao from the Water Children's Theatre Academy, the children's musical "Sun Wukong Outwits Bull Demon King" was written and composed by Professor Jingbo Yu, a Chinese composer living in the United States, with orchestration by famous Chinese children's music arranger Yongfeng Pan. The play was performed by students from the Water Children's Theatre Academy in Shenzhen and American local students worked together to complete the production.
The content of "Sun Wukong's Wisdom in Fighting the Bull Demon King" is based on one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, "Journey to the West". It combines elements of Chinese opera and American hip-hop culture, and in the music that combines traditional Chinese opera and rock, the kung-fu master Sun Wukong and the dancing Bull Demon King engage in a battle of "eating Tang Seng" and "saving Tang Seng", combining Chinese traditional culture with American pop culture to humorously and vividly showcase the charm of Chinese children's drama to American teenagers.
It is reported that the play was once funded by the Cultural Development Special Fund of Bao'an District, Shenzhen, China, and participated in the recording of the Shenzhen Children's Spring Festival Gala. It was also an award-winning work at the Nanshan District Children's Drama Exhibition Season in Shenzhen.
This Broadway performance was the first overseas performance of the play outside of China. From August 11th to 13th, 2018, the "Chinese Traditional Culture Song" concert featuring ancient Chinese poetry and music, composed by Professor You Jingbo, a Chinese composer living in the US, was held at Broadway in New York and the United Nations, with a global press conference. The event was one of the cultural activities celebrating "International Youth Day" in response to the United Nations "Culture for Peace" resolution. "Chinese Traditional Culture Song" is a series of traditional Chinese music albums composed and recorded by Professor You Jingbo, a Chinese composer living in the US and the artistic director of the National Music Center of the United States, and a professor at the Beijing Contemporary Music Academy. It took several years to create and has been published and distributed in more than 180 countries worldwide. The songs in the album are composed in Chinese ethnic scales and integrate elements of Peking Opera, Yue Opera, Huangmei Opera, Chinese folk songs, and popular music such as rock, jazz, and reggae, with a fusion of ancient and modern, traditional and fashionable, and Eastern and Western characteristics.
